Very first things to do (within 30 days after being hired)

Regular Sector

1. Send a G.O.S. form now (within 30 days of hiring) to Human Resources (HR). This will confirm your hiring priority for the current academic year.

In April you can download the G.O.S. form and submit to the College by April 30.

2. Get your scholarity evaluated. Bring HR all your official transcripts and diplomas (within 30 days), or bring an official Attestation de scolarité from the  Minister of Education.

3. Get your experience evaluated. Get letters from previous employers confirming past employment experience and submit them to HR (within 30 days). Any job can be credited, not just teaching, provided it is somewhat related to your discipline. If you were self-employed, special procedures apply (contact the DTU).

4. Mark down in your agenda the need to submit another G.O.S. in the month of April.

5. Become a DTU member.
This costs only $1 and allows you to vote at general assemblies.
Find out more about how the DTU works. Download the DTU membership application form.

Continuing Education

1. Get your scholarity evaluated. Bring HR all your official transcripts and diplomas (within 30 days), or bring an official Attestation de scolarité from the Minister of Education.

Since Continuing Education teachers are only paid based on scholarity, they do not need to get their experience evaluated. However, if you foresee moving to the Regular Sector, it might be a good idea to have your experience evaluated now (to prevent future delays).

2. Become a DTU member. This costs only $1 and allows you to vote at general assemblies.
Find out more about how the DTU works. Download the DTU membership application form.

3. Send a G.O.S. form now (within 30 days of hiring) to Human Resources (HR). This may strengthen your chance to teach in regular education.

How to get work?

Regular Sector

Your most important duty is to send your G.O.S. form (General Offer of Services) to Human Resources, between April 1 and April 30, each year.

This will activate your hiring priority for the next academic year.

If you do not send your G.O.S. between April 1 and April 30, you will lose your hiring priority for the next academic year. You cannot be late!

Work is distributed by order of hiring priority.

If you are a part-time teacher: also apply to continuing education and summer school postings (see right column).

In April, download the G.O.S. form or get a copy from Human Resources and submit it before the April 30 deadline.

Continuing Education

In Cont Ed, you must apply to each posting for which you would like to be considered.

Once you apply for a posting in your discipline, this activates your hiring priority for the course in that posting.

To know what postings are available, check the Dawson College web site:
Cont Ed Postings

Postings are "posted" for 10 days only, so check often, particularly:

In early November (for winter).

In early April (for summer).

In early May (for fall).

Send a G.O.S. form now (within 30 days of hiring) to Human Resources (HR). This may strengthen your chance to teach in regular education.

Your rights and obligations

Your rights and obligations are defined in the collective agreement. You should have a copy. However, since the document is not very "reader friendly," a number of more digestible options exist: FREE!

  • Attend one of the special "Non-perms" or "Cont Ed" information meetings
These meetings seek to inform and answer any of your questions on job security, workloads, leaves, sick days, duties, etc. Each meeting is organised once or twice per term. For dates and times, check the news & events section of this web site, or check the Owl Hoots (the DTU newsletter).
If you would like to be individually informed of the next meeting, call Elisabeth at local 1799.

  • Get the DTU package for non-permanent teachers
Get the DTU package for continuing education teachers
Packages prepared by your DTU team; so they also include Dawson specifics. Available in print form (drop by our office at 8A.11). These packages are distributed at the information meetings.

For the courageous ones, we suggest you go ahead and read the collective agreement.

Insurance plans

This section highlights the miscellaneous insurance plans offered to you. Please check the Member info section for more details.

Regular Sector

Medical/Life Insurance
By law, you must subscribe to the Dawson Medical Insurance plan unless you are covered by a private drug insurance plan elsewhere. If you have a spouse, or family, they too must be covered.

Dental insurance
OPTIONAL

Short-term disability insurance
Included in your work contract (free). After 5 consecutive days of sickness, you fall under this plan. Applies until the end of your contract.

Long-term disability insurance
Long-term disability insurance OPTIONAL for non-permanent teachers. MANDATORY once you become permanent. Covers teachers after the first two years of disability.

Continuing Education

Continuing Education teachers do not have access to any of the insurance plans. If conted teachers had access to the insurance policies they would be required to be members of these plans and to pay for them. This would not affect those already insured elsewhere. However, it would significanltly increase the cost of insurance for younger teachers with dependents.
